In 1947 R. Freeman Butts attempted to fuse cultural and educational history in his work, A Cultural History of Western Civilization. Eight years later came a second edition. Both volumes were widely utilized as textbooks and frequently quoted. The book under review was to have been a third edition, but in view of the rapid and revolutionary developments all over the world has become, according to the author, a "new and different book." Actually it utilizes, to an extent, the content and viewpoints of its predecessors and continues the policy of regarding "the history of education as an integral part of the history of social institutions and the history of ideas" and of emphasizing "those political, economic, religious, and intellectual controversies of the past which would be most illuminating to the making of informed judgments about the predicament of the present."
