Over the past two decades, there have been major debates within the “critical” educational communities (the plural is important here) over the appropriate theoretical/political resources that are needed to think more seriously about the relationship between education and power. At times, the divide has been quite rancorous, with each side hurling evidence, rhetoric, and concepts at the other. Unfortunately, there are those on both sides who do not listen carefully enough to each other. Of course, this descriptive binary does not capture the complexity of reality on the ground. There are many people, like myself, who have taken the position that both the Marxist and neo-Marxist tradition(s) and the postmodernist and poststructuralist tradition(s) are necessary. Even though they may come from what are sometimes incommensurable paradigms, each is essential, and each complements the other.
