Whither Music in America? Barriers Down!

AN ANSWER TO THE QUESTION "WHERE is music going in the United States today?" is scarcely to be found on the contemporary concert stage or in recent publications by contemporary American composers. These phases of our musical life affect too few people and are too highly selective for us to look to them for the source of new directions in music. If we examine for a moment the last great movement to affect musical concepts and materials, we see more clearly where significant changes may be expected at the present time.
