Progressive Essentialism in Education

The authors believe that the ultimate source of moral authority in education is the community. They believe, further, that despite certain anti-democratic tendencies and widespread confusion with respect to the essential meaning of democracy, the deepest moral commitments of the American community are to be found in the democratic tradition. The ideals and requirements of that tradition should therefore shape the ends and purposes of education.
