Victory Over Discrimination and Hate: Differences vs. Superiorities

by Ruth Benedict 1942

EDUCATION MUST FACE TODAY A whole array of new and complicated problems, for upon the clear-sightedness of children now in school will depend the functioning of the post-war world. We must meet the youngsters' excitement about successes on Guadalcanal by letting them explore the needs and tragethes of the Pacific; we must satisfy their curiosity about our allies by helping them to get really acquainted with them. We must rouse their interest in things they have not yet thought about and see that they can base decisions on undistorted facts. For in a democracy the things that can be carried out and those that cannot be depend upon public opinion and these children now in school will make that public opinion. It is a huge order. Nevertheless there are priorities. Our children have a greater need of some insights than of others.
