This War and America: Objection and Reply (1)

by Norman Thomas & John L. Childs 1941

THE EDITORS OF FRONTIERS OF DEMOCRACY have been good "enough to ask me to comment on their careful statement concerning this war and America. My sharp disagreement with it arises not from any substantial disagreement in the ends that we all should seek, or in our adverse judgment of Nazi lust for power and Nazi employment of exaltation of cruelty and duplicity as instruments of government. What I deplore in this statement, as in so many statements by college professors and other educators, is what seems to be the utter failure to examine realistically, in the light of our knowledge of history and psychology, the relation of the means to the ends they seek.
