Reform in Graduate and Professional Education would be a useful book even if its utility were limited to a demonstration of how firmly academic scholarship is holding the fort in the university. The book's value goes beyond that to update information on new programs and methods, particularly in the professional schools. Shortcomings occur in its slight treatment of the behavioral dynamics involved which enable a university to keep specialized academic research as the overriding criterion of institutional excellence. Despite the attrition in university funding by legislatures, federal agencies, and foundations since 1968, the presence on a campus of one Nobel laureate or four members of the National Academy of Sciences still is better than forty enterprising young professors, so far as national appraisals, research grants, and general reputation are concerned.
