Adapting Educational Procedures from Abroad

AMERICAN schools and colleges are parts of a long line of educational institutions that have developed during almost three thousand years. Inevitably the purely institutional roots of the transplanted schools have been fed and watered in the European culture that has maintained itself in America. But the social soil and climate of the New World have caused the plant to change so radically that it is truly a social mutation. Consequently, efforts to judge its adequacy and to treat it, whether by pruning, grafting, or crossbreeding, demand discrimination based on understanding of American life.
