We are reminded by every election cycle that some policy issues never remain dormant for too long. School choice is one such issue. Take the following scenario for example. A candidate for State Superintendent of Schools in South Carolina had a rather ambitious school choice voucher plan as a part of her platform. In crude and passé terminology, vouchers should have played well in a “red state.” However, her opponent went on the offensive by calling the plan a $500,000,000 “voucher tax,” and, of course, a tax plays even worse in a “red state.” So, it is no surprise that the school choice candidate was defeated in the election. This anecdote relays that the politics of school choice are still quite contentious and, further, that the debates around school choice’s possible benefits and drawbacks are far from settled.
