During the late 50s and early 60s, attitude change was the "hot topic" in experimental social psychology, and although values were examined in scores of studies, the ratio of attitude to value studies ran something like five or six to one, according to one study.1 Milton Rokeach moved against this tide and concentrated on values, and now we have a highly readable summary of his most recent thinking and research on human values. This, his second book on values, 2 makes five contributions to the field: It provides: (1) a typology of human values; (2) a simple method for measuring values; (3) a well documented picture of American values, circa 1968; (4) a multi-dimensional theory of political ideology; and (5) a theory of how values (and hence the behavior they mediate) can be changed.
