I confess I do not ordinarily like books that are collections of previously published papers (though I plead guilty to having put one of them together myself), but I find Levine and Bane's "Inequality" Controversy readable and useful both. The goal of the authors (editors?) is surely significant: to provide "perspective on the issues of schooling and distributive justice." (p. 5) The selection of papers displays a thoroughly developed awareness of those issues. Best of all, the last two papers, one each by the authors, provide a nice point/ counter-point to the whole argument of the book. What is included? In the first of three main selections, one finds papers arranged around the general topic of effectiveness of schooling and the subtopic of the efficiency of educational reform. The papers are by Hodgson, Lasch, Averch, et al., and Moynihan. The drift of the argument, as one might expect, is that schools... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
