Chapter 4: Teachers' Characteristics: Research on the Indicators of Quality by Karen Zumwalt and Elizabeth Craig What this chapter promises In this chapter, Zumwalt and Craig indicate that they will describe the quality profile of teacher candidates in terms of college entrance tests, college GPA, college major, status of the college attended, teacher tests, and state teacher certification status, and that they will report these quality indicators for demographic groups defined by gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic background, and age. They state that they will then review research relating the teacher quality profile to differences in the teaching force, including the type of institution (large/small, public/private) attended, the type of school (high SES/low SES) at which teachers are employed, and length of teaching tenure.
