In this era in which politicians and many social policy experts are blaming the poor for their poverty and punitive cutbacks are masquerading as welfare reform, Lives on the Edge: Single Mothers and Their Children in the Other America by Valerie Polakow is a welcome and much-needed dose of reality and good sense. Polakow’s fundamental premise is that poverty is a social product, the result of political economy rather than individual deficiency and pathology. This premise sets the stage for her exploration of the particular vulnerability of women and children in this extraordinarily affluent society in which, over the past decade and a half, the gap between rich and poor has become greater than at any time since these data have been collected. After examining in historical perspective attitudes and social policy toward motherhood and, more specifically, toward poor women and children, Polakow moves on to a discussion of the definition...
