For those of us who teach gifted education courses, the second edition of a major work on the conceptions of giftedness, edited by Sternberg and Davidson, is long overdue. The first edition, published in 1986, has been out of print for some time. The 36 contributors to the 24 chapters in the new edition are renowned in the field of gifted education, both nationally and internationally, and bring their expertise together in this book. Contributors were asked to address the following questions in their chapters: 1. What is giftedness? 2. How does your conception of giftedness compare with other conceptions? 3. How should gifted individuals be identified? 4. How should gifted individuals be instructed in schools and elsewhere? 5. How should the achievement of gifted individuals be assessed? (Sternberg & Davidson, 2005, p. viii) There appear to be as many variations of what constitutes giftedness as there are contributors to the book.  At one end of the spectrum, Borland maintains that...
