The goal of this book is an admirable one.  The editors and contributors want to respond to critics of public education who claim “government schools” are “beyond hope” (p. 1).  They want to refute charges that public education has become a corrupt and ineffective monopoly and that Horace Mann’s ideal of the common school should be replaced by new, more creative private sector approaches. Unfortunately, most of the authors in this volume are themselves critics of the schools, although their criticisms focus on long-standing issues of inequity in funding and uneven quality, especially in the nation’s urban schools. As a result, their dilemma is how to defend schools and support teachers from unfair and unfounded right-wing criticisms, while concurrently prescribing new solutions that would make public education for democracy even better.  A difficult task and yet they succeed—largely because they know schools intimately and manage to reframe the issues, albeit...
