This volume, skillfully translated into English by Philip Phenix, constituted Manach's last lectures prepared in 1960-61 for delivery at the University of Puerto Rico. The publication of Manach's last writings by the Center for Education in Latin America at Teachers College provides us with a stimulating, if at points arguable, portrait of the relations between the United States and Latin America, and especially the Caribbean. But it also explores the social and philosophical thoughts of a man whose personal history can only be understood in dynamic relation to the history of the frontiers which he examines.
