The swings of the pendulum in education have been accepted as an inevitable part of the process of change. However, our present extremes may be intolerable rather than inevitable. At one pole we find educators writing lists of behavioral objectives—the more specific the better, even if trivial. At the other pole, students are engaged in exercises to get "in touch with their feelings" and to find themselves in encounters with others. The characterization of our age as both the Age of Analysis and the Age of Anxiety is being caricatured in the schools. For those who ask for a synthesis through which education can provide for the student's cognitive development and at the same time engage his feeling and will, this book provides a challenging response.
