Foundations textbooks are notoriously dull. In their effort to cover the field (a field that necessarily expands in scope from decade to decade), such books tend to become a kind of hodgepodge of watered down history, philosophy, sociology and psychology—a Cliffs Notes of current research and practice arranged in brief chapters that move through the field at a rapid clip. Most traditional foundations texts are multi-authored, with no attribution ascribed to any one part of the text. The resulting tone is one of adamant neutrality—articulate and bland. In the last decade, publishers have tried to jazz up their texts with add-ons (accompanying DVDs are now common) or by shifting the structure of these books to make them more reader friendly. Some books, for example, now build their chapters around key questions regarding the readers’ beliefs and expectations; others offset the narrative text with ethnographic anecdotes framed in boxes in the...
