Until recently, most colleges didn't worry about whether their freshmen could write. Though the students of ten, twenty, or fifty years ago were hardly good writers (most teachers aren't good writers; most writers aren't good writers), they were able to write a few coherent, decently organized paragraphs with a minimum of serious grammatical errors. Today, such minimum competence in English cannot be taken for granted. Students with weak writing skills are now entering college, passing through their courses, graduating, and moving on to work or professional schools practically untouched by careful training in how to write clear and correct prose. This is part of the "writing crisis," and its effect has already been felt. Because of the widespread distress over the decline in writing ability, composition has taken on new importance in the college curriculum.
