Erik Erikson is undoubtedly one of the major psychoanalytic theorists of our time. His Childhood and Society is a classic statement of ego psychology and remains one of the most influential books in modern psychoanalytic thought. His Young Man Luther is a breathtaking intellectual tour de force that sets standards of psychohistorical scholarship that few writers have achieved. And his numerous essays on the life cycle, especially those dealing with adolescence, are major contributions to developmental psychology. It is all the more disappointing, therefore, to discover that Erikson's latest work, Toys and Reasons: Stages in the Ritualization of Experience, is not a very good book. Without Erikson's name attached to the manuscript, one doubts that it would ever have seen the light of publication in its present form. There are too many opaque sentences that, even upon rereading several times, don't make sense. There are too many gaps in the logical... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
