The term lifelong learning has come to enjoy increasing popularity in discussions of educational practice across the lifespan, encompassing obligatory schooling as well as a variety of post-school settings. As with many such terms, it is often employed with a dizzying array of meanings depending on the context in which it is being used. Lifelong Learning: Education Across the Lifespan edited by John Field and Mal Leicester draws together a variety of voices to examine the scope of discussion and debates associated with lifelong learning in a number of international, organizational, and community contexts. With well-known contributors from Europe , Africa , North America , and Australia , this edited book offers a broad-ranging account of a number of contemporary lifelong learning initiatives and the diverse economic, social and pedagogical issues associated with them. Although originally published in 2000, it has been reissued in 2003 in a paperback edition. In their introduction the editors say that in recent years lifelong learning has experienced a remarkable rise in prominence on the policy agenda internationally. From...     JANE DAWSON is Assistant Professor of Adult Education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Canada. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her areas of specialty and research interest include the politics of work and education, critical perspectives on lifelong learning, qualitative and arts-based research, and philosophical inquiry. She is currently working on a variety of projects examining forms of resistance to the dominant work paradigm.
