This book, the outcome of research undertaken by the Lamar Society, claims to be the first book written about those private schools for whites which have arisen in the South in response to court-ordered desegregation of the public schools. As such it serves as an introduction for anyone wishing to understand the nature of these schools. The authors show that in most cases these schools are attempting a return to the educational methods of an earlier age, with a strong emphasis on the acquisition of basic skills through rote learning, and with the inclusion of religious and patriotic values. Although integration was undoubtedly the reason why many white parents felt a need for an alternative to the public schools for their children, this book makes it clear that dissatisfaction with the public schools goes far beyond reasons of race.
