In-service teacher education is presently enjoying a renewal in this country; and with its rising popularity has come the need for thoughtful review of its complexity—its problems as well as its promise. For this reason Edelfelt's volume Inservice Education: Criteria for and Examples of Local Programs is a most welcome arrival on the educational scene. An expansion of an earlier and briefer publication, this book presents twenty-nine criteria pertinent to design of in-service programs and concise overviews of nine in-service projects, each of which exemplifies some of the criteria. The criteria were derived through interactions in two Teacher Corps-sponsored workshops and solicitation of critical comments on drafts of the criteria from educators in various areas of the country. The nine programs were developed independently in eight parts of the country (one was carried out in the United Kingdom), under quite different constraints and with varying approaches to the task.
