In fewer than one hundred pages, Edith Cobb has distilled a life of imaginative thought. At home in biology, anthropology, and literature, as well as social work and child development (theory and years of observation are joined here), the author weaves an integrated pattern that relates the child's experience of the world to adult creativity, and both of these to the evolution of man and of the cosmos. The book is more than the title would suggest. Its scope is breathtaking, but the organization of ideas and the prose itself are clear and tightly packed. Because the book is often technical, the layman or the poet may find it too scientific; the scientific-minded may be uncomfortable with the poetry. The author, not as well known as she deserves to be, is introduced by Margaret Mead with warmth and appreciation for the insights she has gained from the author during their professional...
