Knowledge Management for School Leaders: An Ecological Framework for Thinking Schools

Although there has been a great deal of recognition in the business world that information and knowledge management can be vital tools in organizations, it is only recently that educational administrators and teachers have begun to look at how they might use information systems to assist in creating effective learning environments. In the business research environment, the evolution from data to information and from information to knowledge plays a leading role in shaping how organizations develop strategies and plans for the future. Using examples from schools, this paper illustrates how knowledge management can enable schools to examine the plethora of data they collect and how an ecological framework can be used to transform these data into meaningful information.

    LISA A. PETRIDES is an assistant professor in the Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she is also the coordinator of the Education Leadership and Management EdD-MBA program, a joint degree program offered by the Educational Administration Program and the Columbia Business School. She is also founder of the nonprofit research think tank the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of management systems and information technology, knowledge management, information and decision making, and issues of access and equity in education. She has worked as an information management consultant, developing management information systems for government contract reporting and business management. She has worked with a wide array of Internet-based technologies for classroom teaching. Her publications include a number of chapters and articles, including Case Studies On Information Technology in Education: Implications for Policy and Practice; “Organizational Learning and the Case for Knowledge-Based Systems,” in New Directions for Institutional Research; and “Web-Based Technologies for Distributed (or Distance) Learning: Creating Learning-Centered Educational Experiences in the Higher Education Classroom,” in International Journal of Instructional Media.
