Four of the ten chapters of this book are written by Robert
Slavin and Nancy Madden. They are creators of the reading
instruction program called Success for All (SFA). These chapters
are aimed at proving to their readers that SFA is a "winner" (p.
xii), i.e., that there are "strong positive effects of SFA
[instruction] on reading and writing achievement" for "children
from prekindergarten to eighth grade" (p. xiii).
However, the words in the title of SFA to the contrary, Slavin and
Madden concede that it "does not work for every child in every
school" (p. xiii). As they explain, the word "success" in SFA
instead stands for a "relentless focus on the success of every
child" in learning to read and write, as the result of a
"schoolwide, coordinated, and proactive plan" of tutelage (p.
Slavin and Madden also acknowledge that "none of the elements of
SFA" is "completely new or unique." Nonetheless, SFA teaching
supposedly is "based on well-established principles of learning and
