Contemporary society is characterized by rapid change, complexity, and diversity. As such it demands complex cognitive, emotional, social and moral functioning on the part of adults to carry out their personal and public responsibilities. The nature of such development and the means to promote it are the focus of Human Development Across the Life Span: Educational and Psychological Applications. The book represents a rich and diverse collection of scholarship and perspectives on human development, throughout which is woven an integration of theory and practice. Although the book is organized in three parts - educating for development, counseling for development, and educating for moral and religious development - there is considerable overlap across these topics. The book makes two primary contributions to the adult development literature. First, it offers a complex, multidimensional portrait of adolescent and adult development. Second, the authors explicitly address implications of adult development for promoting growth across the life span.
