As a faculty member and administrator of an academic program grounded in community-based experiential education, I wanted to respond positively to and strongly recommend David Lempert’s Escape from the Ivory Tower. A book about creating a new vision for higher education, one based on “democratic experiential education” and one that provides concrete examples of courses and experiences based on that vision, would seem to have much to recommend it to anyone concerned about the future of higher learning. But while the author has chosen the right battle to fight, and while the book includes worthwhile examples of experiential learning projects, ultimately, it fails to provide a broad-based vision and strategy to remold colleges and universities into more democratic, connected social institutions that can provide powerful learning for students and communities.
