I began to read Rodriguez’s gripping memoir on Martha’s Vineyard, that summer colony for the super rich and those who come to gawk at them. In Edgartown particularly, one can see the rich at play in a way that has become rare in American society. They are not all hidden behind high hedges or protected by phalanxes of security guards in television-monitored lobbies. Strolling down Edgartown’s South Water Street, one can see uniformed maids serving drinks on verandas overlooking the harbor. It was on South Water Street, as a matter of fact, that I was slowed by the glance of a boy of seven or eight who was waiting for his parents to finish unloading the trunk of their Mercedes. The boy coolly assessed me and asked, “Are you a mashed potato?” His parents continued to unload the luggage and said nothing. But I caught the embarrassed grimace that passed...
