University of Michigan, Ann Arbor ALAN P. COTTRELL was born in New York City and attended the Horace Mann Lincoln School at Teachers College, Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. in German from Ohio State University, has taught at the University of Washington, and is now professor of Germanic languages and literatures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His books include Wilhelm Muller's Lyrical Song Cycles: Interpretations and Texts (1970), Goethe's FAUST: Seven Essays(1976), and Goethe's View of Evil and the Search for a New Image of Man in Our Time (forthcoming, Floris Books, Edinburgh). Other main interests include the Scandinavian languages, particularly Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish.
