In a graduate seminar at the University of Texas in 1969, Louis Zurcher administered the Twenty Statements Test to the students. This test asks the respondent to answer twenty times the question (addressed to herself) Who am I? The answers are then coded into four categories. Category-A answers describe physical attributes, such as “I am six feet tall,” “I am dark,” “I am 28,” “I live in Austin.” Category-B answers describe social roles, such as “I am a student,” “I am a husband,” “I am a taxpayer,” “I am a writer.” Category-C answers describe styles of behavior or preference, such as “I am a happy person, ” “I like football,” “I am lonely,” “ I am a searching person.” Category-D answers describe comprehensive states of mind, such as “I am alive,” “I am a part of the cosmos,” “I am a person,” “I am in time and space.” Respondents who answer...
