Alan Tom is a sophisticated student and practitioner in the realm of teacher education. In the introduction to this book, he recalls his involvement as a teacher, supervisor, curriculum worker, and teacher trainer or theorist for over twenty years. Teaching as a Moral Craft attempts to help teachers and others concerned with teaching understand what it is all about. Throughout Tom’s excellent critique of current modes of research on teaching and his development of a replacement for them, there runs a metaphysical theme that ultimately defeats his approach. In part this book is valuable because this deep theme runs so close to the surface. This is the metaphysic: Of human affairs, where meaning and intention are central to all action and conduct, there can be no rigorous empirical scientific study that has direct relevance to the explanation, prediction, and control of those affairs.
