Howard Gardner is known among educational and psychological communities as an innovative theorist who has dedicated a large part of his professional career to changing the way we think about intelligence. Although his pioneering ideas have their supporters and their critics, the fact remains that the depth of his contribution to the way we think about intelligence cannot be underestimated. In his path-breaking book Frames of Mind, Gardner challenges common notions of intelligence that are based principally on intellectual capacities measured by standardized intelligence tests.[1] Gardner asserts that people's mental abilities cover a wider range of skills than those traditionally measured and valued by society. In Frames of Mind he identifies seven different intelligences-musical, visual-spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, logical-mathematical, and linguistic. According to Gardner, people generally have different amounts and configurations of these capabilities. In Gardner's most recent book, Creating Minds: An Anatomy of Creativity Seen through the Lives of Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, Eliot, Graham, and Gandhi, he extends the intellectual characterizations to explain exceptional creativity.
