The Last Little Citadel is the third and last in the series A Study of the High Schools, having been preceded by Sizer’s Horace’s Compromise1 and Powell, Farrar, and Cohen’s The Shopping Mall High School.2 There is some logic in the three volumes’ having been published in reverse order but one supposes there was a sound reason for the order chosen since this was announced at the outset. If one ignores the hyperbole of the jacket blurb (“this pathfinding history of the modern American high school”), The Last Little Citadel is a good account of a very interesting period in the American high school, the educational institution that James Bryant Conant once described as “not only one of the finest products of democracy, but as a continuing insurance for the preservation of the vitality of a society of free men.“3 The title of the book, Sizer tells us in the Foreword,...
