Concerned with the retreat of “late modern” art from inherited artistic traditions as it has become an essentially nihilistic phenomenon, Peter Abbs is equally unhappy about the direction of a good deal of contemporary aesthetic and literary education. In A is for Aesthetic, the author suggests a number of avenues to redirect our experience with art and to reinvigorate aesthetic education. Among the more interesting proposals are the author’s arguments for (1) an approach to the arts that emphasizes renewed attention to certain ideas in aesthetic theory; (2) a need to reject (or at least supplement) the current fascination with instrumental reason, linear thinking, and a number of positivistic tendencies in contemporary society; and (3) a proposal to alter English studies so that this field is, seen as one of the arts, rather than as an area within the humanities.   The approach to art advocated in this book is a complex and provocative one- and could significantly reorient the contours of art education in the public...
