Effective Education: A Minority Policy Perspective

This collection of sixteen papers written over a period of time (five of which have been published) is intended to introduce a “minority perspective” into today’s policy debates about education, and especially those generated by the various committees, commissions, and task forces of the mid-eighties. The book is divided into five parts: “Concepts, Goals and Policies,” “Alternative Realities, " “Effective Schooling,” “Teaching and Learning Strategies,” and “Future Projections.” A number of themes recur throughout the book despite the diversity of the individual pieces, which range from the autobiographically based “The Morehouse College Saga” and “Mentoring Methodologies” to material previously published in Centerboard, Urban Review, Journal of Negro History, Teachers College Record, and Equity and Choice. These themes are: relationships between what the author describes as “dominant and sub-dominant populations”; the effects of race, gender, and socioeconomic status on careers and education; the goal of adequacy, as opposed to excellence, in education;...
