Much of what I know about teaching has come from listening to serious teacher-talk and watching other practitioners at work. I expected to learn a lot from Sunrises and Songs, and I was not disappointed. It is a thoroughly satisfying book, whether one reads it as a practical guide for making “poetry an important part of childrens lives” (p. xiii), or a rich description of exemplary teaching practice, or a careful ethnographic study of a particular kind of classroom in rural Ohio. Originally a dissertation cited by the National Council of Teachers of English and Kappa Delta Pi as an outstanding work of educational research, Sunrises and Songs, in this rewritten version, speaks in a collective voice that is direct, personal, and very persuasive about the value of poetry and the range of possibility it holds for children.
