Adolescence may well be the most misunderstood period in the life span. In research dominated until recently by work on clinical populations and problem behaviors, studies in a different voice have recently surfaced to challenge widely accepted beliefs about the experiences of adolescents.1 A literature on contemporary adolescents growing up in diverse economic and social circumstances is emerging. One of the richest examples of this genre is this report by Francis Ianni and his colleagues, based on a thirteen-year research enterprise in ten communities throughout the United States. The intensive field ethnographic approach, combined with psychodynamic interviews, is a welcome antidote to the many more narrowly conceived studies on selected aspects of behavior that still characterize research on adolescence. This is one of the few contemporary efforts to examine the interconnections among social institutions—families, peers, schools, workplaces, community agencies—and their reciprocal influences on the course of adolescent development.
