This is an affecting book about affecting books and their pedagogical as well as therapeutic uses. By means of numerous examples, in which students, teachers, doctors, and others are allowed to tell their own stories about the stories that have profoundly affected their lives and behavior, Coles builds an irresistible argument for the value of stories in all professions where understanding of other people, and oneself, is important. This probably includes all professions, though the book deals mostly with psychotherapists, doctors, and teachers. It is a book that practices what it preaches, using the stories of his various subjects and his own stories to show that the power of the story is not simply something of value in “the arts” or for leisure hours but properly has a role in making sense and meaning in all human endeavors.
