Charles Beard, the great historian, once said that the national budget of a country or a government could give as profound insights into its culture and its civilization as does its literature. The authors of this book do not make quite that sweeping a claim for a country's toys, but they do insist that an examination of the kinds of toys we make and sell "might give some insight into our entire society" (p. 5). Their final achievement in this book may be assigned somewhere between a mere cataloguing of historical facts about the toys and the toy industry of America and an integrated analysis of the ways in which our toys authentically express the social philosophy and the historical development of our country. I do not know whether this book will "take its place as the definitive and authoritative book on American toys" as the jacket suggests. It does give... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
