The research presented in this volume could not be more important or more timely, despite the fact that the majority of the data was collected about ten years ago. As the title indicates, the authors have undertaken the formidable task of describing the interaction of home and school factors that affect children’s literacy achievement and development. As the title also indicates, the outcomes were gloomy for the relatively small group of children from low-income families studied. The extraordinary complexity of this study is reflected in the fact that Unfulfilled Expectations is a companion volume to another report published in book form, The Reading Crisis: Why Poor Children Fall Behind.1 Data were collected on a total of thirty-two boys and girls.
