This book comes to grips with a major public health problem in our country, one ranking in the top ten as a killer. For too long has the issue of suicide been considered out of bounds not only socially, but even in scientific domains. Since a suicidal latency exists in many of us, it may well be that laws against suicide unconsciously reflect a need to mute its infectious aspect. Overruling, perhaps, is the reality that suicide forces us to look at the individualized face of death, and in the presence of death. Western culture has inclined to run, hide, and seek refuge in group norms and actuarial statistics. Yet death is something that comes to each one of us. The price for denying it is self-alienation.
