Gordon’s work explores essential concepts and significant contexts that shaped women’s higher education between 1890 and 1920. It also tells a fascinating story of the second generation of college women. Perhaps her most important accomplishment in the book is the complex picture she presents of women’s culture in higher educational institutions during the Progressive Era. She does this by focusing on the “transitional generation” of women whose lives bridged Victorian and modern America (p. 1). These women, according to Gordon, brought values acquired in the separate sphere of women’s lives into higher educational institutions to create places for themselves and their interests. They shaped student life through the curriculum and extracurriculum. They participated in progressive political and social reform activities and in voluntary organizations.
