Harold Rugg, like many men whose lives have really mattered, was too big to be contained within the boundaries of a single career. Trained as an engineer, he turned psychologist in time to be deeply involved in the mental-measurement movement at the time of the First World War. Shifting to education, he pioneered new curricular conceptions, particularly in the social studies and in teacher education. Still later, he became a bona fide philosopher, animated by a vision of the good society and the good life in which education played a realistic and facilitative social role. Throughout this evolution of his own mind and thought, his growth was something like that of the nautilus: Each new development was built upon and encompassed the older ones.
