On the opposite side of the world, at almost the same time, a body of Christians in Japan were not only deliberating the role of a Christian university, but actually setting one up for operation. The idea of a top flight Christian university which would compare favorably with their great state universities had been under consideration by Japanese Christians for a long time. Unable to make headway with the idea under imperial Japan, they thought the democratic postwar period more opportune for its realization.
