    MARIA AVILA began her career in social work, organizing in the rural areas of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. She earned a degree in Social Work at the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, a BA in Psychology at University of Illinois at Chicago, an MA in Social Service Administration at University of Chicago, and a PhD in Adult and Community Education at Maynooth University, in Ireland. Her research focuses on civic engagement, particularly in the use of community organizing practices with the aim of transforming the culture of higher education institutions and their surrounding communities. Her recent publications include the book Transformative Civic Engagement Through Community Organizing, published in 2017 by Stylus Publishing.
