- Kathryn Obenchain
Purdue University E-mail Author KATHRYN OBENCHAIN, Ph.D., is an associate professor of social studies education and Associate Dean for Learning, Engagement, and Global Initiatives in the College of Education at Purdue University. Her research centers on democratic citizenship education in the U.S. and emerging democracies, specifically Romania. She is particularly interested in how social studies classrooms are structured to promote democratic knowledge, skills, and dispositions through curricular and instructional decisions, what informs these decisions, and students’ experiences in these classrooms. Dr. Obenchain has published two books on social studies education, as well as in numerous domestic and international journals. Currently, she is exploring the civic identities of teachers and how those identities are manifested in their instructional decisions. She is also examining how K-12 students understand civic life, and their own roles as citizens.
