A book about public opinion such as Daniel Yankelovich’s latest recalls Walter Lippmann’s classic Public Opinion and what has remained a central dilemma for American democracy in the twentieth century. When John Dewey reviewed Public Opinion in 1922, he wrote: Mr. Lippmaan has thrown into clearer relief than any other writer the fundamental difficulty of democracy. But the difficulty is so fundamental that it can be met, it seems to me; only by a solution more fundamental than he has dared to give. . . . Because this fundamental general education is at once so necessary and so difficult of achievement, the enterprise of democracy is so challenging.1 Yankelovich has attempted to throw into clearer relief a modern version of some of those same fundamental difficulties.
