The Relationships Between Research and Evaluation Studies

The relationships between research and evaluation studies need to be made explicit. It is evident that many of the activities associated with evaluation in education are also associated with educational research. In many instances, no distinctions are made between evaluation and research. Are evaluation studies to be considered simply a subset of the more general set of activities denoted by the term "research," or are there characteristics of the activities involved in evaluation that can or should be used to distinguish it from research?
