    THOMAS L. ALSBURY is Professor of Educational Leadership at Seattle Pacific University, and former school high school chemistry/biology teacher, principal, and central office administrator. He currently co-directs the national University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Center for Research on the Superintendency and District Governance. Dr. Alsbury is the founder and President of Balanced Governance Solutions™, an educational consulting group focused on improving school governance. Dr. Alsbury is listed as an expert in school governance by the Associated Press and has consulted on school governance issues in 10 countries and across the United States. His new model of school governance called Balanced Governance has been adopted by several school districts and is being piloted as a statewide model. He has over 50 publications on school board and superintendent research. His 2008 book The future of school board governance: Relevance and revelation earned Dr. Alsbury the UCEA Culbertson Award for significant contributions to educational leadership research. Dr. Alsbury developed the District Strategic Teaming Model, funded by the National Science Foundation, and is currently working with district leaders in high minority, high poverty districts to build capacity and sustainability for district reform leading to improved student achievement. Recent publications include his 2015 book entitled Improving school board effectiveness: A Balanced Governance approach by Harvard Press that introduces a new governance approach for improving school board effectiveness and includes practical tools for use by superintendents and school board members. He also has recently co-authored a chapter in the 2015 Handbook of education politics and policy (2nd ed.) by Fusarelli & Cooper (Eds.) on the changing roles of superintendents and school boards.
